Andrew Irwin is aiming to make his comeback to the British Superbike Championship round at the TT Circuit Assen with the MET fonaCAB Racing team this weekend, 108 days after sustaining an arm injury in a testing crash at Knockhill.
Irwin sustained a broken right humerus in June and since then has undergone surgery and extensive rehabilitation in preparation to make his comeback, missing 18 races. The MET fonaCAB Racing team have continued battling on track in their debut season, first with Graeme Irwin making a comeback to step in for his brother and most recently with Danny Buchan returning at Cadwell Park.
Irwin said: “I am really looking forward to Assen after what feels like a really long four months since Donington Park. From being injured, I worked really hard to get back before the end of the season, which was always my goal. Honestly, when it happened I didn’t know how long it would take to recover, so to be back with three rounds to go is really good.
“I look towards Assen this weekend with the aim of just getting back on the bike again; I have absolutely no expectations. I know how big of an injury I have had and what I am coming back from, so I am just going to build over the weekend and enjoy it as much as possible. I am just looking forward to being back on my MET fonaCAB Racing Ducati.”
Team Principal John Erwin commented: “The team are delighted to welcome Andrew back this weekend for Assen. Andrew has continued to be an instrumental part of the team, even while injured, so it will be fantastic to have him back this weekend with a smile on his face.
“There is no pressure on Andrew from a performance perspective. We’ll use this weekend to help him build back up, regain his confidence and get comfortable on the bike again, with the aim of hopefully seeing some strong results at Donington Park and Brands Hatch.”
