Barry Burrell celebrated his second Main Race win on the bounce this afternoon after a last lap move on Kieran Smith.
Following a tough Heat yesterday, the defending champion had to start from P7 on the grid, as Josh Corner, who led the points going into the race, got the lucky pole draw.
But Corner’s hopes of victory were dashed before he’d even completed a lap. After getting the holeshot, he made a mistake and crashed out on the first lap, as Strudwick took the lead from Kieran Smith.
Strudwick led for the first six laps as behind, the likes of Burrell, Heat Two winner Bobby Varey and Nikki Coates were all looking good and swapping positions on every lap.
On Lap Six, Varey hit the front with a move on Strudwick and quickly started to edge a gap. However, he ran wide a lap later allowing Strudwick and Burrell – who had found his way up to third – to dive past.
Seconds later, K Smith and Coates found their way past Burrell and Strudwick to start Lap Nine in P1 and P2. Burrell soon passed Strudwick for P3 and then was quickly past Coates and into second.
K Smith led Burrell as they began the final lap but Burrell wasn’t done yet and charged past into Riches to take the lead. Smith tried to get back past but couldn’t and had to settle for second at the flag, 1. 328secs behind.
Coates took third with a late pass on Strudwick who crossed the line fourth, with Varey rounding out the top five.
The result means it's all change at the top of the standings, as Kieran Smith now leads the points ahead of twin brother Christian and Corner, who led before the race, now down to fourth.
