Nikki Coates and Bobby Varey took a Heat win each this evening – as Barry Burrell, fastest all weekend so far, could only manage a fourth place finish.
Burrell had started from pole in the opening scrap and got away well, as Christian Smith slotted right in behind him and was soon snapping at his heels, making a move for the front on the second lap.
Coates was running in third place but was playing it steady, taking a couple of laps to settle in before making his move on the fourth lap to pass both of his rivals to hit the front.
A rare mistake by Burrell on Lap Five dropped him back to fourth and he wasn’t able to regroup, as Coates took the win at the end of seven laps, beating Smith by 0.479secs as Josh Corner took third. Burrell was fourth with Jack Tynan fifth.
Varey started from pole in Heat Two but it was 2024 champion Thomas Strudwick who got the best start, launching himself into the lead ahead of Kieran Smith as Varey dropped back to third.
On the third lap, Varey passed both Smith and Strudwick for the lead, staying ahead until the penultimate lap when Smith squeezed past. But Varey came straight back through to lead into the final lap and despite a lot of pressure from Smith, was able to hold him off for the win.
Smith had to settle for second, just 0.023secs adrift as James Ellison was third with Strudwick fourth and Dale Thomas fifth.
