Bobby Varey and Barry Burrell both stormed to victory in today’s Heats races ahead of tomorrow’s Main Event.
Varey headed the grid for Heat One and got a good start – but was mugged going into Turn Two by a flying Christian Smith who took the lead. However, Varey wasn’t about to get left behind and came back through on the second lap to put himself back at the front.
It looked like a good battle between Varey and Smith was on the cards, with Nikki Coates also closing in as behind, Josh Corner had fought back from a Row Three start to make it up to fourth.
But on Lap Three, Smith crashed on the exit of the chicane giving Varey all the breathing space he needed to slowly build up his lead. He came under no pressure at all and eventually crossed the line 3.470secs ahead of Coates.
Corner was third, a further two seconds adrift of Coates as Liam Vella was fourth and Josh Wainwright fifth.
Heat Two was all about defending champion Burrell, who made it look like an easy victory.
Kenny Macleod had started from pole but Kieran Smith was the fastest rider away as Burrell hit Turn One in second position with Macleod third before passing Smith for the lead.
From here, he was able to quickly edge a comfortable gap as Smith enjoyed a lonely race in second position – and the big race became the battle for third.
Macleod, Dale Thomas and Jack Tynan fought all race long, with Thomas and Macleod swapping positions all the way to the flag.
Burrell took the win ahead of Smith as Thomas managed to hold off Macleod to take third, as Macleod was fourth ahead of Tynan.
