Richard Cooper claimed pole position for the ABK Beer 0% BMW F 900 R Cup at Donington Park in damp conditions ahead of Nikki Coates, who leapt up the order in the closing stages.
Rutter had been leading the times before a crash at turn three in the final 15 minutes of the session, ending his challenge early, giving Cooper the opportunity to surge ahead.
In the closing stages there was a shuffle of positions as Nikki Coates saved his best until the end to move second, just ahead of James O’Mara and Rutter who had to settle for fourth place.
Thomas Strudwick was fifth on the qualifying times with Andre Compton completing the second row.
