Glenn Irwin and the BeerMonster Ducati team became the third different race winners at the opening round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Silverstone, holding off tough opposition to end the weekend on top. The victory making them the third different team, rider and manufacturer to celebrate a race win at the season opener.
Glenn Irwin had to fight hard for the victory and on the opening lap Jason O'Halloran had taken the lead, but Josh Brookes was pushing his McAMS Yamaha rival and he moved ahead by the start of lap two.
Brookes had the lead ahead of O’Halloran and Jack Kennedy, who had a lightning start from the front row on the Mar-Train Yamaha with Danny Kent, Leon Haslam and Glenn Irwin in the freight train.
By lap 12, O’Halloran had regained the lead and Kent had moved into second before the former Moto3 World Champion launched to the front for the all-new Lovell Kent Racing Honda team.
Kent was in the lead for five laps, but Glenn Irwin had been working his way through the pack and had moved into second before firing the BeerMonster Ducati ahead at Luffield on lap 18 with the top group featuring nine riders.
Glenn Irwin then fended off the opposition, despite Brookes having moved into second with three laps to go, whilst Tommy Bridewell had also moved up the order and fought his way into third.
O’Halloran meanwhile regained fourth place on the final lap, as he got ahead of Kent with Haslam again in the leading battle to finish race three in sixth place.
Saturday’s Bennetts BikeSocial Sprint Race winner Kyle Ryde was seventh ahead of Kennedy, who dropped to eighth in the closing stages. Lee Jackson and Ryan Vickers completed the top ten.
