Brookes is back! The double Champion returns to winning ways at Silverstone

09 April 2023

Josh Brookes is back on the top step of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship podium after the second race of the weekend at Silverstone as the double Champion claimed the victory for FHO Racing BMW Motorrad ahead of BeerMonster Ducati pairing Tommy Bridewell and Glenn Irwin.

Kyle Ryde had taken the initial advantage after launching off the Omologato pole positon into the lead for LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha ahead of Bridewell and Brookes. By the second lap, Bridewell had moved ahead but it was short lived as a lap later, Ryde had regained the position.

As the leading trio diced for the lead, Brookes then moved to the front of the pack on lap five and then the FHO Racing BMW Motorrad rider was pushing to keep his rivals behind him.

Bridewell and Ryde were duelling for second whilst keeping the pressure on Brookes; but the lead group soon became seven riders pushing for the podium including Jason O'Halloran, Jack Kennedy, Leon Haslam and Glenn Irwin.

Glenn Irwin was moving rapidly through the pack and after running outside the top 12 at the start of the race, the second BeerMonster Ducati was up to fourth by the end of the lap 21.

Brookes was holding his position at the front, but Glenn Irwin was scrapping with Ryde for third. The pair trading positions over the final three laps before the race was red flagged when Danny Buchan crashed the SYNETIQ BMW as he reached the pit straight. He was able to walk away from the high-speed crash.

The victory’s was Brookes’ 55 in the Championship and his first in two years with the BeerMonster Ducati team claiming their first double podium of the season with Bridewell and Glenn Irwin as yesterday’s race winner Ryde was forced to settle for fourth.

O’Halloran held onto fifth after holding off Haslam with Kennedy again inside the top eight to complete the leading group. Danny Kent had another solid performance in eighth place ahead of Andrew Irwin and Lee Jackson who fought his way through to tenth after starting 16th on the grid.
