Irwin under the lap record to top Cadwell Park Official Test

26 August 2022

Glenn Irwin topped the Bennetts British Superbike Championship Official Test times at Cadwell Park this evening, lapping under the existing circuit record to set the pace for the Honda Racing UK team at their home round.

Glenn Irwin recorded the best lap of the three-hour test in the final 15 minutes, displacing Leon Haslam from the top after the VisionTrack Kawasaki rider took the advantage with just under an hour remaining.

Danny Buchan though was improving in the closing stages, moving into second position on the SYNETIQ BMW to ease Haslam back into third, but the 2018 champion was soon on another string of fast laps, moving back into second place with five minutes remaining. Haslam was also under the lap record, 0.062s adrift of Irwin’s pace-setting lap.

Buchan ended the test third fastest with Bradley Ray holding fourth; the Rich Energy OMG Racing Yamaha rider had been the rider setting the initial pace at the midway point of the test, but he was able to hold off an improving Jason O'Halloran who completed the top five.

Takumi Takahashi had a strong start to the weekend in sixth position, to give Honda Racing UK two riders inside the top ten, just ahead of Oxford Products Racing Ducati’s Tommy Bridewell.

Andrew Irwin was eighth fastest ahead of Christian Iddon despite a crash in the final 30 minutes of the session, with Rory Skinner completing the top ten ahead of tomorrow’s SUPERPICKS Free Practice.

MCE Ducati’s Tom Sykes and Josh Brookes were just outside of the top ten in 11th and 12th respectively.
