Irwin makes it a double dose of wins at Silverstone

17 April 2022

Glenn Irwin doubled up on Bennetts British Superbike Championship race wins at Silverstone this afternoon for Honda Racing UK, holding off an incredible last lap attack from Kyle Ryde to win the drag to the line by just 0.079s.

Bradley Ray got the holeshot off the line to lead the pack for the first time as Luke Mossey, Storm Stacey and Dan Jones tumbled out of the action on the opening lap.

Ray was leading his Rich Energy OMG Racing Yamaha teammate Ryde, Rory Skinner and Glenn Irwin, but at the end of lap three Tom Sykes crashed out at Luffield with Chrissy Rouse caught in the aftermath bringing out the BMW Safety Car.

When the race resumed on lap eight Ray was still heading the pack but on lap 21, Ray slid out of contention at Luffield, ending his chance of another podium finish.

At the front of the field, Glenn Irwin had carved his way through the pack and was handed the lead courtesy of Ray’s crash, with Ryde and Skinner in close contention. Again, Ryde was piling on the pressure but Glenn Irwin was defensive and did just enough to hold him off to the chequered flag.

Rory Skinner became the fourth different podium finisher with a strong third place, whilst his FS-3 Racing Kawasaki teammate Lee Jackson secured fourth after getting ahead of Andrew Irwin on the leading SYNETIQ BMW.

Jason O'Halloran completed the top six, breaking away from Peter Hickman, Tommy Bridewell and Danny Buchan as Christian Iddon completed the top ten.
