Johnny Garness became the first champion of 2022 as he took his 11th win of the season – while his only title rival was forced to retire.
Garness, who only needed to finish 10th or higher in today’s race to clinch the title, led from the opening lap to eventually cross the line 0.195secs ahead of Rhys Stephenson after a last lap fight to bank the win and the championship.
“What an amazing season this has been, I’ve won the championship by winning the race,” he said. “I couldn’t be more happy, I’ve been dreaming about this moment all my life and now I’ve finally won a championship. I’m just buzzing.”
But it was heartbreak for his MLav VisionTrack Academy team-mate and title rival Carter Brown, whose dream of championship glory ended on lap seven when he was forced to retire.
As Stephenson took second, Harrison Crosby was third some 25 seconds behind, with Lucas Brown fourth and Filip Surowiak taking fifth.
