Glenn Irwin led the times in the Cadwell Park test ahead of this weekend’s Bennetts British Superbike Championship event, narrowly setting the pace by 0.301s from reigning champion Josh Brookes, who had been the rider to topple from the leading spot.
The positions frequently changed during the test as the track continued to dry after an earlier shower and therefore the lap times continue to tumble.
At the beginning of the two-hour test, Gino Rea was one of the first riders to post a time before Andrew Irwin edged ahead. However, after the first 45-minutes Christian Iddon, Josh Brookes, Lee Jackson and Xavi Forés had all enjoyed a spell at the top.
Tarran Mackenzie crashed out unhurt at the Gooseneck; he was able to return to pitlane, ending the session 23rd fastest. Kyle Ryde was another rider to crash out during the test; he sat out the remainder of the evening.
At the halfway point Brookes had a 0.296s advantage over his VisionTrack Ducati teammate Iddon with Ryan Vickers and Andrew Irwin in close contention and Rory Skinner completing the top five.
Glenn Irwin moved to the top of the times in the final 30 minutes of the session, but only briefly, as Brookes regained the position, before there was a brief red flag interruption when Forés crashed out unhurt at Charlies after moving second in the times.
As the test approached the final ten minutes Brookes was still heading the pack, but with five minutes to go, Glenn Irwin set a fastest pace, which left him fastest at the chequered flag ahead of Brookes.
A last sequence of laps put Andrew Irwin into third position just ahead of Dan Linfoot in the final two minutes after the TAG Honda rider had climbed into second just a minute earlier.
Lee Jackson surged up the order in the closing minute to take fifth at the circuit where he holds the existing lap record, just ahead of Rea, Forés and Iddon.
Peter Hickman and championship leader Jason O'Halloran completed the top ten.
