Olsen scores top ten finish on Bennetts BSB debut with Smiths Racing BMW

Alex Olsen impressed on his Bennetts British Superbike Championship debut at Oulton Park last weekend, scoring a top ten finish in his first race for the Smiths Racing BMW team.

Olsen started the weekend strongly, just missing out on the top nine in Q3 in tenth place, but started ninth on the grid due to Andrew Irwin’s penalty.

The Sittingbourne rider ran in the top ten throughout the opening race and eventually crossed the line in ninth place for his first ever Superbike finish. Olsen then started Sunday’s second race of the weekend, from 13th on the grid. In a hard-fought race two he finished in 16th place.

Olsen said: “It’s been a great start for me and to finish inside the top ten on my BSB debut was more than I could have hoped for. It’s been difficult to get used to the electronics on the bike and I’ve had a lot to learn so I’ve tried not to change too much and just try to be consistent with my lap times.

“Sunday was more challenging but the more I’ve gone out on the bike the more I’ve learned, and track time is what I need. I haven’t been to Assen since 2014 but I went well then so hopefully that will be the case again in two weeks’ time.”

The opening round of the 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place at Silverstone on April 10/11/12.
