Brookes set for Brands Hatch and pushing for a return to winning ways

Josh Brookes was a double winner back at Brands Hatch on the Grand Prix circuit last summer and ahead of the next round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship on June 14/15/16, the Be Wiser Ducati rider is ready to come out fighting after missing out on the podium last time out at Donington Park.

Brookes had been showing his pace throughout free practice and claimed his second pole position of the season at Donington Park, but it didn’t turn into the results he desired in the races with a heavy crash in the opening race. The 2015 champion bounced back in the two races on Sunday to bag valuable points and retain his position inside the top six in the standings but the Australian admits he expected more than a fourth and fifth place finish from the triple-header event.

Brookes said: “Donington turned out to be a tough weekend but the start of the weekend had looked really promising and was going really good. Literally up until the first race everything was going just fine, where I had a problem with the grip. I knew the situation but I made a mistake in the heat of the battle. I went for the chicane at the same rate as I would have previously but then I got caught out. I was sore afterwards but I don’t blame that for the results it just makes life harder.

“Race 2 was hampered with rain and then I made my own mistake in race 3 so there were a few mistakes on my side that also contributed to poorer results than I feel we were capable of. Sometimes I guess with my experience I should have known how to manage the situation better - there were ways I could have avoided mistakes. Sometimes you need that sort of reality check; we are all human and all make mistakes and you have to always be on your game.

“Moving on to Brands the first thing on my mind is to see if the bike performs good on that track and I expect that it will after the tracks it has been too so far. I tend to have a history of good results at Brands and in the past so has Ducati but there are lots of other riders to beat. Never a guaranteed result but all the ingredients are there to have a strong weekend. I would certainly like to get some good points in my direction for the championship.

“I think Oulton was the point the bike showed potential, and the same at Donington where Scott got the results. It’s a strong competitive package but everyone else has been right there too in Qualifying and even the races it’s been +0 between riders and no real lead stretched like we have seen in the past.

“I think Brands will be another close weekend and for sure Tommy Bridewell will be strong as he likes Brands for sure and the Suzukis should be stronger, the Yamaha we won with last year and has good results there previously so I have every expectation for a lot of riders pushing for the front places.

“You have to be totally 100% on your game and I am hoping to up mine when we get to Brands Hatch.”
