Brookes edges out Hickman in hectic opening free practice

Josh Brookes was back at the top of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park this morning, maintaining his position on the timesheets following last week’s official test at the Cheshire circuit from Be Wiser Ducati, holding off Peter Hickman by just 0.050s.

The session had been interrupted with red flags, but Brookes was unfazed and continued to improve his pace, despite Danny Buchan moving ahead several times during the opening free practice before the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki rider ended the session third fastest.

Hickman’s impressive performance came after some recent new parts which the Smiths Racing BMW team tested at last week’s test and it clearly gave the Lincolnshire ace a boost as he moved to the top of the times in the final five minutes before Brookes moved back ahead.

Jason O'Halloran bounced back from his crash at last week’s test to finish fourth fastest in the opening session for McAMS Yamaha, holding off Tommy Bridewell who continued to move up the order for the Oxford Racing Ducati team.

Scott Redding proved that he was getting to grips rapidly with the challenging undulations of the Cheshire circuit by clawing his way up the order to post the sixth fastest time ahead of Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin. The second Team Green rider, Ben Currie, crashed out earlier in the session bringing out the red flags, the Australian sustained a fracture to his left leg and will miss the remainder of the weekend.

Luke Mossey was the fastest of the OMG Racing Suzuki contenders in eighth as he moved ahead of Christian Iddon; the Tyco BMW split him from team-mate and championship leader Josh Elliott who completed the top ten, pushing joint standings leader Tarran Mackenzie into eleventh.

Fraser Rogers also crashed during the opening session at Water Tower, sustaining a fracture to his right arm.
