Glenn Irwin claims first pole of 2022 with fastest ever lap of Silverstone National

16 April 2022

The pace continued to intensify ahead of the opening Bennetts British Superbike Championship race of 2022 at Silverstone this afternoon. Glenn Irwin delivered a blistering lap to set the fastest ever BSB lap time of the National circuit in SUPERPICKS Qualifying for Honda Racing UK.

Glenn Irwin had instantly set the pace and was unmoved from the top of the times with a time of 52.796s as the leading 12 riders were under the lap record in SUPERPICKS Q2.

As Honda Racing UK held the leading position, Kyle Ryde had moved into second place for the Rich Energy OMG Racing Yamaha team, just 0.025s ahead of his teammate Bradley Ray. The pair were able to hold onto the front row, marking the first time that the team had completed the feat in the championship.

Tommy Bridewell had surged up the order in the final minutes to head row two for the Oxford Products Racing Ducati team, pushing Leon Haslam back into fifth place as the VisionTrack Kawasaki rider had a strong qualifying performance after progressing through from Q1.

Jason O'Halloran had been the pace-setter yesterday and the McAMS Yamaha rider will start sixth on the grid for today’s opening race.

The third row is led by Rory Skinner and FS-3 Racing Kawasaki in seventh place, he held off Andrew Irwin on the SYNETIQ BMW and Dan Linfoot on the iForce BMW.

FS-3 Racing Kawasaki’s Lee Jackson completed the top ten, just ahead of Christian Iddon who crashed the Buildbase Suzuki at Luffield in the final minutes after an earlier red flag with two minutes left on the clock, following a technical problem for Danny Buchan.

Tom Sykes will start from 12th on his return to Bennetts BSB, just ahead of his MCE Ducati teammate Josh Brookes in 14th.
