Honda UK has a strong history in the British Superbike Championship and in 2003 this team became Honda Racing. The following year, with ongoing sponsorship from HM Plant, the team enjoyed backing from the Honda Racing Corporation with the provision of full factory support for their CBR1000RR Fireblades.
Michael Rutter took six victories to finish as runner-up in 2004, while Ryuichi Kiyonari was sixth overall in the series. The following season, the Japanese rider won a dozen times, but inconsistency cost him the title and he was forced to settle for second.
Kiyonari returned in 2006 and a dominant performance secured him the crown, which he repeated for the second consecutive season in 2007, heading off the challenge of team-mate Jonathan Rea in the final standings.
In 2008 it was an all new squad with Leon Haslam joining Cal Crutchlow after Kiyonari and Rea moved on to the World Superbike Championship. Crutchlow immediately made an impact at the opening round, with his maiden BSB win coming at the first race event at Thruxton. Haslam had a charge as the season progressed and was able to secure second in the standings by the final round, just ahead of team-mate Crutchlow.
For 2009 it was all change again for the Louth-based team with 2008 British Supersport champion Glen Richards lining up alongside Josh Brookes who moved from the World Supersport Championship to BSB. Brookes finished his maiden BSB season fourth in the overall standings, taking ten podium finishes despite missing several races. Richards was also forced to miss races after crashing and breaking his femur at Knockhill; he ended the season twelfth overall. At the rounds Brookes and Richards were unable to race several other riders lined up for the BSB team including Steve Plater, Steve Brogan, Karl Muggeridge, John McGuinness and Kiyonari.
In 2009 Steve Plater lifted the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship title in HM Plant Honda colours, whilst Brogan and McGuinness finished second and third respectively in the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship for the Padgetts Honda team.
The team had one of their best seasons to date in 2010 as they re-signed Brookes for a second consecutive year and he was joined by the team's former double BSB champion Kiyonari who returned to domestic action from the World Superbike Championship. Kiyonari and Brookes were both Title Fighters in the Showdown and ended the season first and second respectively.
In the 2010 BSB support classes Richards returned to the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship in a bid to secure a second consecutive title for Honda UK, but injury at the opening round ended his title hopes after missing races. In the National Superstock 1000 Championship Plater looked set to challenge, however he also endured a heavy crash at the North West 200 and was only able to return over the final rounds of the season.
For 2011 HM Plant Honda have arguably their strongest line-up to date, with Kiyonari returning to defend the number one plate and he is joined by double BSB champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne who rides for the Louth-based team for the first time. The team are also looking to regain the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship they last won with Brogan in 2008 after signing former Australian Supersport champion Jason O'Halloran.
