Honda Racing debut new Fireblade SP as testing programme gets underway in Spain

Honda Racing have begun their testing campaign ahead of the 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship, breaking cover at Albacete, Spain as Andrew and Glenn Irwin made their debut on the new Fireblade SP alongside the team’s Superstock line-up of Tom Neave and Davey Todd.

The team took delivery of the new 2020 Fireblade SPs before Christmas and have been working around the clock ahead of the track debut of the new Superbike yesterday (Tuesday). The team now have three further days on circuit to make final preparations before the next official test at Silverstone on April 2.

Andrew added: “It has been a positive first day; we had to start slow and work our way up and that is what we have been doing – it has just been steady away! We have been doing lap after lap, and I am happy as the bike feels good and it is like an Evo spec at the moment with the standard engine still but it is a good base and we have a lot to work through and much more to come. We want to keep improving and we have a few more days testing, so the first day was more positive than I thought it was going to be.”

Glenn said: “It has been a really good first day, thankfully the boys have put a lot of work in back at the Honda Racing base. We did expect some little teething problems and things but we haven’t had that. We have all done a lot of laps, made various changes and have begun to understand the new bike and potential is good. I am really happy and it was a positive day; it has been great working with my new crew. I last worked with Spider in 2011, but the boys have been mint and we have got through a good number of things.”
