Hickman holds on to P1 in opening practice at Brands Hatch

Peter Hickman snatched the top spot in the opening Bennetts British Superbike Championship free practice session of the weekend at Brands Hatch, holding off Josh Brookes in the closing minutes by just 0.067s.

A hectic opening session began with the Yamahas leading the way before Jake Dixon headed to the top of the times for the RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki team. The closing moments of the session produced an array of movements with Richard Cooper also taking a turn at the top of the times for Buildbase Suzuki.

Glenn Irwin had missed the earlier part of the session but he surged up to fourth in the closing moments, pushing ahead of Christian Iddon and Cooper who had a strong end to their opening free practice.

Brookes moved into second in the final moments, narrowly missing the top spot from his Smiths Racing BMW rivals with Andrew Irwin also climbing into the top ten on the second Be Wiser Ducati in seventh place.

Andrew Irwin’s improvement nudged Tarran Mackenzie back to eighth; the McAMS Yamaha rider had been at the top of the times earlier in the session with Danny Buchan and James Ellison completing the top ten.

Championship leader Leon Haslam narrowly missed out on the top ten, finishing eleventh fastest on the timesheets.
