Brookes sets sights on second Bennetts BSB title as season finale beckons

The destiny of the 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship comes down to the final three rounds at Brands Hatch this weekend, and VisionTrack Ducati’s Josh Brookes leads the contenders with a 16-point advantage ahead of the final triple-header of the year.

Brookes claimed the lead in the standings for the first time in 2020 following a victory and two third places at Donington Park and the 2015 title-winner is now bidding to uphold his advantage on the Grand Prix circuit this weekend, a track that has fond memories for the Australian.

Of the last ten races on the GP track, Brookes has celebrated victory in seven of them with the other three going the way of Glenn Irwin, Leon Haslam and Richard Cooper.

Brookes said: “I am leading the championship into the final event and that was a nice way to leave Donington Park. The final race there was tough. I was trying to control the race at the front and I was pushing to try and get a gap, but as fast as I tried, it just stayed the same. I started to drop off from Taz and Glenn and I tried to stay with them and see what happened in the closing laps, but then had a couple of moments with the front end.

“I didn’t give up on having another chance, but in my mind I knew it was an important race to finish and that I couldn’t afford to have any DNFs, so they rode well and deserved their places.

“It feels good to lead into the final event. Normally I go into Brands Hatch trailing in the points and trying to claw back a desperate chance at the championship, so to go with a lead is a great improvement on years before.

“Strangely enough, having the points lead has taken away a lot of the pressure and I feel quite comfortable going into Brands Hatch. I feel relaxed, which is good and obviously it’s clear I have a very good record around the GP track, so I want that to carry on. I always look forward to racing there and this time is no different. The weather forecast is looking good and I’m sure there will be some great racing but I’m ready for this challenge. I just need to focus on working hard and doing a good job and what will be will be.”
