Countdown to testing: Brookes hits California with Supercross hero Johnson

Josh Brookes has been gearing up for the start of the 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship with a trip stateside as the 2015 title-winner visited motocross hero Ricky Johnson in California.

Brookes visited Johnson, a seven-time AMA National Championship winner, heading to the opening round of the Monster Energy Supercross at Anaheim, before hitting some of the region’s motocross tracks ahead of his return home to Australia.

Brookes said: “I had been chatting with RJ last year and we got messaging, he even appeared on a video call before the final round of the championship as a surprise. We kept in touch since the end of the season and I said that we had wanted to go to America and watch a round of the Supercross, so we planned to go to Anaheim and it combined with Chad Reed’s retirement announcement. I thought A1 would be the only reality of getting to an event and see the race.

“I told Ricky and he said I was more than welcome to come and stay. The weeks and months passed and then literally a few days before Christmas my passport had come back with my visa for the UK and then we immediately looked at flights and had it booked to go over.

“He was super accommodating with his wife Steph and he is a true legend. The stories of his old racing days are so good for me as a fan to listen to, but most of all he was so funny and had me in stitches with his unique sense of humor. I had a great time with some riding out there too.”
