Iddon encouraged by Tyco BMW progress ahead of Brands Hatch

Christian Iddon had his best results of his 2019 Bennetts British Superbike Championship campaign last time out at Donington Park and the Tyco BMW rider believes they are within striking distance of their first podium finish of the season ahead of Brands Hatch (June 14/15/16).

Iddon bounced back from a huge high-side in Datatag Qualifying left him 18th on the grid for the opening race and forced to fight his way through the pack. A determined ride saw him move forward eleven places and take the chequered flag in seventh position.

The Stockport rider then followed it up with two sixth place finishes in the following two races to complete his strongest weekend of the season so far after dueling with the lead group in the earlier stages of the race.

Heading to Brands Hatch Iddon is feeling confident of further gains, he said: “I think Donington Park was our best weekend so far. I was actually really struggling in free practice and I was a bit disappointed as I always enjoy Donington but then we made some changes and the time in Q1 came to me. It was going well but then I had a huge high-side which was really frustrating as I had just started to really build some momentum. And launching yourself to space does tend to bosh your momentum!

“Race one was good; I went from 18th through the pack and finished seventh and if I am honest I was able to get through the pack as I was presented with loads of opportunities with people going wide and tripping each other up but it was still good to move up the order like that. I was getting closer to the lead group but I had used the best of the tyre towards the end of the race, but it was quite a positive race for myself and the team.

“Then I had a fifth place in the other two races. Race two was actually really frustrating; I was happy sitting behind Xavi, but then I seemed to get into the clutches of someone else and then when I tried to make the move back, it then made me open to someone else making another pass. I felt like I had the pace to fight at the front but it just didn’t work out.

“In race three I felt really good again and then I had a moment coming out of the final corner and it didn’t look too bad although it lost me time but when I landed it knocked the handlebar and it meant I lost the thumb brake, which I use a lot and generally just didn’t feel right. I dropped places and then made them back up again so that was also a positive.

“I am feeling good on the new BMW, more so than I did on the previous model and I am enjoying my racing so much this year. We still have a lot of work to do and we have been getting some different parts to test which is another positive again as we are always moving forward and working on development.

“Brands Hatch is quite similar to Donington in its characteristics and so I do think the BMW should feel good there. The circuit has been pretty good to me in the past and I have been on the podium a couple of times there so I am hoping that history can repeat itself and we can be up there at the sharp end fighting for those top finishes in the races there.”
